Synchrotron infrared spectroscopy to 0.15 eV of H2 and D2 at megabar pressures.

چکیده
New synchrotron infrared absorption and reflectivity techniques have been developed to test predicted band overlap metallization in H 2 and D2 above 150 GPa at various temperatures. Measurements on both isotopes to maximum pressures of 216 GPa show no evidence for Drude excitations in the midinfrared to near-infrared spectrum. The most definitive are measurements on D 2, which remains transparent down to 0.15 eV at 170 GPa and 83 K. The results put new bounds on the optical conductivity and possible band-gap closure at the 150-GPa transition. In addition to strong vibrational transitions, new infrared absorption features are observed.

Optical evidence for a nonmolecular phase of nitrogen above 150 GPa
Optical spectroscopy techniques, including visible and near infrared (IR) Raman and synchrotron IR methods have been applied to study solid nitrogen at megabar pressures. We find that nitrogen becomes totally opaque above 150 GPa, accompanied by the disappearance of Raman and IR vibrational excitations, while new broad IR and Raman bands become visible. Optical absorption measurements reveal th...
متن کاملElectronic and magnetic studies of materials to megabar pressures
Numerous recent developments in diamond-cell techniques are making possible a growing range of studies of the electronic and magnetic properties of materials to megabar pressures. We review recent advances in this area, including magnetic susceptibility, electrical conductivity, and synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques. Highly sensitive magnetic susceptibility techniques have allowed the ...
متن کاملSubnanosecond, time-resolved, broadband infrared spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation
A facility for subnanosecond time-resolved ~pump-probe! infrared spectroscopy has been developed at the National Synchrotron Light Source of Brookhaven National Laboratory. A mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser produces 2 ps duration, tunable near-infrared pump pulses synchronized to probe pulses from a synchrotron storage ring. The facility is unique on account of the broadband infrared from the syn...
متن کاملQuantum dynamics of adsorbed normal- and para-H2, HD, and D2 in the microporous framework MOF-74 analyzed using infrared spectroscopy
Low-temperature diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the quantum dynamics of molecular hydrogen and its isotopologues adsorbed in the microporous material MOF-74. At least two distinct adsorption sites are revealed by increasing the concentration of H2 within the material and monitoring the successive appearance of absorption bands with decreasing bathochromic shifts or ...
متن کاملHighly selective quantum sieving of D2 from H2 by a metal-organic framework as determined by gas manometry and infrared spectroscopy.
The quantum sieving effect between D2 and H2 is examined for a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) over the temperature range 77-150 K. Isothermal adsorption measurements demonstrate a consistently larger isosteric heat of adsorption for D2 vs H2, with the largest difference being 1.4 kJ/mol in the case of Ni-MOF-74. This leads to a low-pressure selectivity for this material that increase...
